Jewish War Veterans-Michigan
Charles Kaye (Z"L) Scholarship Foundation
The Jewish War Veterans Department of Michigan—Charles Kaye (Z”L) Scholarship Foundation (JWV-MI—Kaye Foundation) is a cooperative effort of the family of Charles Kaye (Z”L) and the Michigan Jewish Veterans. Founded in 2025 with a generous legacy gift by the family of Charles Kaye (Z”L) and further supplemented by gifts from Jewish Veterans, organizations, and community leaders, the Foundation is a Michigan Corporation and an Internal Revenue Service-recognized public charity.
Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV), chartered in 1896, is the oldest active Veterans Service Organization in the United States. JWV Department of Michigan was chartered in July, 1940. Our Department helps Veterans through advocacy for better clinics, hospitals, Veterans homes, and Michigan Veteran-friendly legislation. We volunteer at Veterans facilities, support local Veteran activities, help maintain Veteran plots in local Jewish cemeteries, and provide scholarships to Michigan Jewish Veterans and their direct descendants.
Perhaps our most important activity is educating the general community about contributions of Jews to the U.S. military services. We participate in parades and other events to continually remind people that Jews serve this country, and that some of us have also paid the ultimate price. In Michigan, we are a Jewish Voice for Veterans, a Veteran's Voice for Jews.
Charles Kaye (Z"L) was a proud Detroiter and Veteran of World War Two. His commitment to education lives on thru several endowments with Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. A past Post Commander within the Department of Michigan, Charles Kaye (Z”L) was ever mindful of the contributions and accomplishments of America’s Greatest Generation.
Charles Kaye landed on Normandy's Utah Beach on June 7, 1944 and was awarded the Bronze Star for actions against the German Army as he fought across Europe on his way to the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart as a result of wounds suffered in the Ardennes in December 1944. Following WW II, Mr. Kaye became a Certified Public Accountant. He married, raised a family, and practiced in the metro-Detroit area until passing in 2012. In 2010, France bestowed one of its highest honors on him by naming Mr. Kaye a "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor. His family is honored to continue giving Scholarships in his memory.
The Jewish War Veterans Department of Michigan—Charles Kaye (Z”L) Scholarship Foundation (JWV-MI--Kaye Foundation) promotes postsecondary school education of Michigan residents that identify as Jewish and are on active duty, are veterans, or are lineal descendents of Jewish veterans. Scholarships recognize academic and leadership excellence among Jewish students, encourage commitment to and service in the Nation’s armed forces, and encourage membership in the Department of Michigan of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America.
Separate scholarships are offered to best qualified applicants (1) accepted by and committed to attend a four-year degree-producing college and (2) accepted by and committed to attend a trade school/vocational school/community college in a program accredited by the Council on Occupational Education resulting in certification in skilled trades.
The deadline for submission of applications is April 30. Recipients will be notified by June 15, and awards will be announced not later than June 30. Awards will be distributed directly to the school the awardee will attend. Failure to meet standards of the institution in which enrolled in the academic year for which the grant is made may require pay-back of the grant in its entirety.
